The conversation around peat moss often focuses on its environmental impact—but Aurora Peat is setting a new standard in sustainable peat harvesting. With over three decades of experience in the Canadian peat industry, we’ve built our company around the idea that environmental responsibility and horticultural performance can go hand in hand.
Our harvesting operations begin with a comprehensive understanding of each bog’s unique ecology. Aurora only harvests from peatlands that have been carefully assessed, approved, and permitted under strict Canadian environmental regulations. But we don’t just meet these standards—we strive to exceed them.
Aurora uses vacuum harvesters to remove just the top layer of sphagnum moss, leaving the underlying structure of the bog intact. This method is less invasive than traditional techniques and allows natural regeneration to begin more easily. We also use a rotational harvest system, allowing areas to rest and regrow, promoting long-term health and sustainability.
After harvesting, we begin the process of restoration using the Moss Layer Transfer Technique (MLTT). This scientifically backed process spreads living moss and plant material over harvested areas, enabling the bog to return to a functioning wetland within a few years. These restored bogs once again serve as carbon sinks, water regulators, and habitats for native species.
Sustainable peat harvesting is more than a buzzword—it’s a core part of Aurora’s mission. Our growers get the highest-quality peat moss available, and our planet gets the care and consideration it deserves. Choosing Aurora means choosing a brand that values tomorrow as much as today.
